Mental Health Skills for Managers
Managing mental health at work can be challenging. What should you say when you’re concerned about someone? Where are the boundaries of your role? And what are your legal responsibilities?
Managing mental health at work can be challenging. What should you say when you’re concerned about someone? Where are the boundaries of your role? And what are your legal responsibilities if an employee is struggling?
This practical bitesize session will give managers the confidence and skills to respond appropriately to mental health concerns, while understanding their responsibilities and the risks of getting it wrong.
We’ll cover how to approach sensitive conversations, respond to disclosures and consider appropriate support and adjustments; without expecting managers to become therapists. We’ll also explore key responsibilities under UK employment and equality law, including the Equality Act 2010, reasonable adjustments, confidentiality and managing risk.
You’ll leave with:
• Greater confidence having conversations about mental health
• A clearer understanding of the manager’s role — and its boundaries
• Awareness of key legal responsibilities and reasonable adjustments
• Practical ways to recognise and respond to potential mental health concerns
• A better understanding of when and how to escalate risk
• Simple approaches you can put into practice immediately
Ideal for: Line managers, team leaders, supervisors, HR professionals and anyone with responsibility for managing or supporting people.
