Why supporting local businesses matters more than ever
Buying local has real impact on businesses, communities and the economy.Local economies are under pressure, so those decisions matter more than ever. Custom by Scout Store shares why supporting local businesses can strengthen communities, build meaningful relationships and create lasting change.
Buying local isn’t just a feel-good gesture, it has practical, ethical and long-term benefits for businesses and communities alike. Local economies are under pressure, and supporting local businesses has never been more important.
Choosing to buy locally has a tangible economic and social impact that we can vouch for. At Custom by Scout Store, we experience firsthand how local spending directly supports the community. 100% of our profits are reinvested straight back into Scouting to fund the future of the movement, and to provide programmes, training and resources for young people. It's a reminder that local purchasing decisions can have wider social benefits too.
The economic effect of shopping locally
Research by Visa in partnership with the CEBR (Centre for Economics & Business Research), found that of every £10 spent with independently-owned local businesses, £3.80 stays in the local area. Unlike national chains, profits from local businesses are more likely to be reinvested nearby - supporting local jobs, services and suppliers, and helping to build stronger, more resilient local economies. Our manufacturing facility, offices and operations are based just outside of Brighton and Hove, in Lancing, where we support the local economy by employing over 65 people, who in turn reinvest their money into the local economy.
Buying local means building relationships
One of the biggest differences between local and large-scale suppliers is relationships. Local businesses are usually invested in doing things well because their reputation depends on it. They rely on word of mouth, repeat customers and mutual trust – from
local people. Local businesses are often built on long-standing relationships rather than one-off transactions. When you work with a local supplier, you’re usually dealing with real people who care about what they do and who they do it for.
This often leads to more care and attention to detail in their products. For example, at Custom by Scout Store, every customised clothing order is manually checked at each stage of production to ensure the highest possible quality garments are delivered to customers.
For many businesses, working locally also means clearer communication, quicker problem-solving and a greater sense of trust. There’s reassurance in knowing exactly who you’re working with.
Buying local as an ethical decision
Buying local often goes hand in hand with making more ethical and considered choices. Many local businesses place a strong emphasis on transparency and responsibility because they are accountable not only to themselves, but to their communities. For businesses increasingly aware of the ethical implications of their purchasing choices, buying local can offer greater confidence and peace of mind.
Ethical considerations such as labour standards, sourcing and environmental impact are much harder to ignore when you’re operating close to home. Commitment to responsible practices is central to how Scout Store operates. We conduct regular supplier audits, ensure there is no child labour in our supply chains, and ship by boat to reduce our environmental impact, amongst other commitments.
Unlike commercial print companies, Custom by Scout Store is entirely owned by The Scout Association, a registered charity. This means, when you order customised clothing from us, you’re not just buying quality garments – you’re directly investing in the future of young people.
Purpose-led purchasing
More businesses are thinking carefully about what their purchasing decisions say about their brand. Purpose-led purchasing is about consistency between brand values and actions, which goes a long way in the eyes of the customer.
Choosing local suppliers, ethical retailers and not-for-profit organisations is one way businesses can demonstrate commitment to community, fairness and Environmental and Social Governance. It also resonates with employees and customers, who increasingly expect businesses to act responsibly and ethically in everyday operations.
A small choice with a lasting impact
Supporting local businesses is about more than convenience or cost. It’s about strengthening communities, building meaningful relationships, and making thoughtful decisions that reflect shared values.
At a time when businesses face constant pressure to move fast and cut costs, choosing local is a deliberate, positive act. And more than ever, those choices matter.
