The 5-minute mentor

The 5-minute mentor

Welcome to the latest installment of the “5 minute mentor”.  As previously mentioned, my hope is if you spend 5 minutes reading these posts you will learn something useful that you can apply to your business.

This month I had planned to talk about the sales funnel but will delay that until next month.  Instead I want to talk about your website – which is a topic that has been reoccurring over the past few months.

Most companies realise they need a website, after all it’s ‘your window to the world’ and often the first port of call a potential client will see.  But beyond that, what is its purpose?

If it’s just ‘brochureware’ then most websites are fine as long as they present a good representation of who you are and what you do.

If you want your website to generate leads then are you clear about what you want your reader to do next and does it have a specific ‘call to action’?

Unless you are selling low value products, most potential customers will not go to your website and purchase straight away so what is the first step you want them to do? (Reading next month’s blog on the sales funnel will help clarify this).

I recently launched my new website with this thought in mind.  Anyone who is looking for a coach or mentor isn't going to buy from just reading a website, however does the website represent me, make it clear who I work with and what I do? Do I demonstrate I understand my customer’s challenge or am I just rabbiting on about me?  What do you think?

So when reviewing your own website, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Does your website represent who you are?  (If you want to be the ‘Rolls Royce’ in your market place, does your website look like a premium brand site?)
  • Does your website demonstrate you clearly understand and empathise with your reader?
  • Does your website clearly and easily guide the reader to where they want to go?
  • Do you have clear ‘call to actions’ on all pages?

Next month I will definitely be writing about the sales funnel.  The recent Chamber bite-sized learning event I ran on this very topic was well attended and generated lively debate, so definitely a hot area for many companies.
