Networking? How to look the part

Samantha Wilding of style&grace talks to us about networking and how to dress for success.

Networking is a central part of running your own business.  Some people love it, others not so much.  What you wear, however, can help boost your networking confidence and help you make the right sort of impression.

I recently spoke to a group of Brighton entrepreneurs about this very topic – what should they consider when dressing for networking.  The session prompted lots of questions, particularly from the men, and it’s clear that many people struggle with how to present themselves sartorially for such events.

There are four key points to keep in mind:
  1. Firstly, preparation is everything. Planning your outfit in advance will help ensure you look your best and give you the confidence to face any social gathering with ease.  It also eliminates last minute stress about missing buttons or shoes that need reheeling
  2. Think about where you’re going, the time of day and the format of the event.  Is it an early morning Chamber breakfast? Or an evening drinks do? Is it outside? Make sure you look appropriate for the occasion
  3. Which brings me on to the three words that should be your guide: smart, professional and appropriate.  Don’t undermine your expertise or professional standing by looking sloppy or wearing tight or revealing clothing
  4. Remember the details, particularly your hair, teeth and nails.  These are the things people notice first, and it always surprises me how many people neglect them
Remember that how you dress says a lot about you, your professionalism, your brand and your lifestyle.  You certainly don’t want to send the wrong messages. If you’d like a free, no-obligation 15 minute consultation, contact me at samantha@styleandgrace.eu.
