Localisation: Three key considerations to focus when going international

Ingenico ePayments are sponsoring our International Ecommerce event on 22 February. Chris Harvey, one of our guest speakers at the event, gives us his 3 key tips on how to get your localisation strategy right.

Cross border ecommerce is booming with a great potential for UK based businesses to capture sales from overseas markets. But are businesses getting it right when it comes to optimising their payments strategy for international expansion? Here are 3 smart tips that will help you get it right.

1.Think 3Ls- Language, Logistics, Layout
There is more to localisation than getting the language translation right. Consider the three L’s: language, logistics and layout. Make sure prices are displayed in local currency, the payment page is also in the local language, and payments are taken via a secure and familiar-looking layout. Payment methods that address these local nuances will put the customer at ease and increase conversion rates.

2.Think beyond credit card
Research the most popular payment method offered in the overseas market. Invoice payments, deferred payments, bank transfers and more such options are popularly used in other countries.
Consider local vs global acquiring.

3.Build trust
Don’t overlook the importance of building trust with the overseas consumer. Be clear about pricing , shipping costs, returns policy and delivery times. Adding badges of a reputed payment provider at checkout aids building trust. Show logos of local payment options and display prices in local currency.

The demand for UK goods and services from overseas markets has never been greater. A successful localisation strategy hinges on identifying the right opportunity areas, measuring progress and being sensitive to local trends
