Don’t Jump: Why you should wait for the right job

Mark Davies, chairman at award-winning financial services recruitment specialists Grovelands, provides a few handy hints about looking for a new job.

We all have a friend who hates their job, hates their boss and hates the company they work for. The best advice you can give is to wait for the right job.

WHY WAIT?

People should take time to find the right thing for a lot of reasons:

  • CVs with five jobs in five years are hard to market. Clients always wonder how long will you stay. We sometimes need to ask candidates to write an explanation covering frequent moves
  • We all know people who have jumped from a job they hate; to one they detest
  • Finally, you spend 50% of your waking life at work. You owe it to yourself to find a great environment and a great job.

We recently placed a candidate who had been subject to bullying at work. He was a true hero, really resilient and one of the nicest people I have ever met. So it was vital we found him a great role, and that we did. But! Before accepting the clients offer he ran through a checklist he had drawn up. I liked the list (wish I had thought of it) and repeating it is the main reason for writing.

THE CHECKLIST:

  • Culture. Do these people have the same values and behaviours as me? Will I be comfortable here?
  • People. Is my new boss supportive? Are my colleagues supportive? When the going gets tough will I get the help I need?
  • Workload. Can I do a great job in the time I have available? Am I worrying about working late every night?
  • Career. Can I progress? Will I get trained? Do my new firm and I have the same aspirations for me?

Having probed in the interviews for answers to these questions, only then should you worry about pay and benefits. If you have doubts about any of these questions don’t join; look for a job that ticks all 4.

Happy hunting! And be careful out there.
