5 steps to choosing the right social media platform for your business

Feeling the pressure to be everywhere on social media? Take a breath. You don’t need to master every platform to run a successful business. The key isn’t doing more - it’s about finding the platform that fits you best. Mel Berry from Social FireFly will walk you through how to focus your energy and build a social media presence that feels manageable, purposeful and actually enjoyable.

Let’s start with some good news: you do not need to be on every social media platform. You do not need to dance on TikTok, write essays on LinkedIn and post daily on Instagram just to run a successful business. Promise.

Most social media stress comes from trying to do too much, in too many places, with not enough time.
Choosing the right platform is really about finding your people and picking the place that feels most like home.
Here is how to do that, without the overwhelm.

Step 1: Picture a real person, not “everyone”

Instead of thinking “customers”, imagine one actual human. Where are they likely scrolling? What kind of content do they stop for? A local shopper, a fellow business owner or a decision-maker will all behave very differently online.

Once you have that person in mind, a few platforms will naturally start to stand out and the rest can quietly fade into the background.

Step 2: Put your detective hat on and listen first

Before you start posting, do a bit of listening. Free social listening tools like Glimpse are great for this. They help you spot what people are already talking about, what questions keep popping up, which topics are gaining momentum and very importantly, where people are talking about them.

Think of it like arriving at a party. You would not jump straight into the conversation shouting about yourself. You would listen, get a sense of the vibe, and then join in. Social media works the same way.

Step 3: Choose the platform that plays to your strengths

You are allowed to have preferences. If you enjoy writing and sharing ideas, LinkedIn might feel surprisingly comfortable. If your business is visual, local or community-focused, Instagram could be your place.

The best platform is the one you will actually use. Confidence grows quickly when you are not forcing yourself into formats you secretly dread.

Step 4: Pick one main platform and go all in (gently)

This is your official permission to focus. Choose one platform to be your main one. Show up there regularly, engage with others and let people get to know you.

If you want to experiment elsewhere, great. If not, also great. One platform done well beats five done half-heartedly.

Step 5: Review, tweak and give yourself credit

Nothing here is set in stone. Use what you are seeing through social listening tools, along with your own energy and results, to decide what is working. You can change your mind. You can switch platforms. That is not failing, it is adjusting.

Social media should support your business, not drain it. When you choose the right platform with intention, listen before you post and focus your energy, it becomes simpler, lighter and a lot more enjoyable.
