Where History Happened: LGBTQ+ Britain Through Brighton

Brighton & Hove Pride will feel especially poignant this year.

Ahead of the weekend, I’m sharing a guide I’ve written to the UK’s LGBTQ+ history through the streets, buildings and public spaces of Brighton & Hove:

It’s the first guide in Where History Happened, a project exploring history through the places where it happened and supporting local charities along the way.

From Edward Carpenter and the campaign for decriminalisation to the response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic and Section 28, the guide explores some of the key moments and places that have shaped the UK’s journey towards LGBTQ+ equality. It is also a reminder that progress is fragile and should never be taken for granted.

The guide mentions several local businesses, and there’s a link to donate to Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard, which began with a telephone in a café in 1975 and has grown into one of the UK’s oldest LGBTQ+ support organisations.
