Brighton & Hove Living Wage Campaign
Brighton Chamber has run the local Brighton & Hove Living Wage Campaign since 2012 – and as far as we know, it’s the only business-led Living Wage Campaign in the UK. From our first employer, Brighton & Hove Buses, to today, the campaign now has over 900 businesses signed up and has elevated the salaries of nearly 5,000 people across our city.
Last year we reached a fantastic milestone of 900 employers signing up to the campaign. This year we're hoping to reach the next goal of 1000 sign ups - could you be one of them?
So what is the Living Wage and why is it important?
Different to the national minimum wage, which is set annually by the government, the Living Wage is independently calculated, based on the amount a person needs to live to a reasonable standard.
The current Living Wage is £12 per hour – or £23,400 per annum (based on a 37.5 hour week). People often think that the Living Wage just applies to staff who are paid hourly, but it’s for salaried staff too!
Paying the Living Wage helps the Brighton & Hove community thrive by having key social impact and helps to alleviate poverty across the city. As well as positively affecting staff retention and productivity, indicating it has clear benefits for employers as well as employees.
Hear from 3 pioneering businesses about why they are committed to the Living Wage and the difference is makes to their employers and business.
