Kicking off with Chats of Sex and Death, Oh Brighton

Did we ever need proof that the Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce subverts traditional stereotypes of suites and monolithic business pursuits? Acting as thought cement, the Brighton Summit kicks off with chats about sex and death, ethical hedonism and the world's greatest shag pad (the Pavilion, thanks Regent).

Key note speakers, Peter James and Sam Roddick, share their side of Brighton. For Peter James, Brighton has provided the setting for his many crime fiction novels. He says: “Brighton was the queen of slaughter places; the murder capital of Europe and is now the favoured place in the UK for premier villains.” If a criminal could design the perfect city, it would be Brighton.

For Sam Roddick Brighton reminds her of her mother, Body Shop founder and human rights activist, Anita Roddick. It is a city that gave her mum permission to launch her business and supported the ethics and philosophy that formed the Body Shop and made it soar.

Sam says: “Brighton allows people to connect to who they are.”

Sam continues to tell the audience about ethical hedonism, a universal pursuit of happiness for the whole community. It is only the beginning, but already this ethos is a shared desire. As Anne Martin says during the media panal, Brighton business sector has a commitment to its city. We need to share and connect with each other in business and pleasure.
