Get to know: The Martin Fisher Foundation

Sarah Evans from The Martin Fisher Foundation tells us more about their inspiring work and how we can get involved.

Who are we?

The Martin Fisher Foundation was founded in September 2015 in memory of Professor Martin Fisher’s outstanding national and international contribution to HIV research, education and patient care. The charity has created a structure for continuing Martin’s achievements and inspirational vision, and to develop new strategies for effective HIV prevention and treatment. In particular, the charity works collaboratively with other stakeholders to develop innovative approaches to improve access to information and services for vulnerable groups.

What have we been up to lately?

Last month we launched the Martin Fisher Foundation bus, the first-ever HIV themed public information bus in the UK, and possibly worldwide. Over 67 million people travel on the buses in a year in Brighton and Hove and now they will get to read up to date information about recent advances in HIV treatment, Martin’s work and the charity’s campaign to boost HIV testing rates and decrease stigma. We hope that this bus with help from all of you will be part of the last push to get to ZERO new HIV cases by 2025. We are very proud of our bus and the messages it is bringing to the people of Brighton and Hove.

The bus will be outside the Royal Theatre on Sunday 1st December for World AIDS Day, so come and have a look around and meet us.

How can you support us?

Volunteer - We are always keen to expand our group of volunteers. No matter how much or how little time you can give, we have various roles available. Currently we have vacancies in social media, fundraising, digital skills and administration. We are always keen to hear from people who would like to help at one of our events too, including challenge events and walking with us in the Pride parade.

Trustees - We are looking for passionate and committed trustees for our board with skills in charity development, business, social media, finance and administration.

Fundraising - We would love you to fundraise for us – here’s a link to our handy fundraising guide for some ideas! From challenge events to pub quizzes, we are always happy to support you in any way we can with your fundraising efforts. You can also make us your business charity of the year.
