The 'Always curious' Breakfast
For 25 years, Sam Knowles didn’t enjoy work. Originally a classicist captivated by the power of story, he stumbled into PR. There he held a series of ever-more senior and lucrative but decreasingly satisfying roles.
A third-life crisis led Sam to a vocational psychologist. She helped him to appreciate his interest in human motivation and behaviour and encouraged him to invest his energy in psychology. He took her literally, quit his job, and did a masters and a doctorate in the subject. This included three years paying students to binge drink and led to his love affair with the storytelling power of statistics.
Fatherhood got Sam back into communications and a series of data-rich consultancy roles. But when his last-ever job as an employee became intolerably claustrophobic, the chance discovery of a book – Dan Pink’s Drive – enabled him to understand his own motivation at last.
At the end of 2013, Sam founded storytelling consultancy Insight Agents. He underpins impactful and persuasive narratives about real people with data, written in that most-prized of corporate dialects: Human. Last year, Routledge published his first business book, Narrative by Numbers. This will be followed next spring by the sequel, How To Be Insightful. The new book will show readers how to unlock the superpower that drives innovation and “be more Archimedes”.
Come and learn about Sam’s journey to fulfilment at work, and meet the characters on that journey who’ve helped him to navigate a path balanced between relentless curiosity and deliberate timeout.
